The basic requirements for this group of species is similar to those of
their British counterparts. The main difference is that many of the
continental species and hybrids are intolerant to the winter wet experienced
in Britain. It is therefore necessary to provide some sort of winter
protection both from rain and, in some cases, frost.
Even though the
mountain species grow in areas which suffer very cold weather in the winter
most will actually be under the snow thus gaining protection from frost.
Full details for each genus can be found under other cultural note
headings.
